To see if you qualify for pro bono help, call or visit the websites of the program that serves the county where you live: The Lawyer Referral Service (“LRS”) is a program offered by the Alabama State Bar Association designed to help the public find a lawyer, who may be mandated to meet their general legal needs. Lawyers who participate in the SBA`s Lawyer Reference Service agree not to charge more than $50 for an initial 30-minute consultation. After the initial consultation, the potential client and the referred lawyer will negotiate a fee for the required services. The nationwide pro bono celebration is scheduled for October each year. Sponsored by the Alabama State Bar, the celebration is a coordinated national effort to show the great difference pro bono lawyers make to the state, its justice system, its communities, and most importantly, the clients they serve. The month is also dedicated to finding more volunteer volunteers to meet the ever-growing legal needs of this country`s most vulnerable citizens. The lawyer`s fees are negotiated between you and the lawyer referred to you.
Only the initial consultation fee is paid by the Alabama State Bar. All other fees are at the discretion of the lawyer. When discussing the cost of representation with the recommended attorney, be sure to distinguish between fees and expenses such as filing fees and other third-party fees charged for your case. Lawyers calculate based on the time and type of work, the difficulty of solving the problem, and your needs as a client. The Lawyer Reference Service encourages you to request a written fee agreement before proceeding with legal work beyond the first 30-minute consultation. The ASB`s Attorney Referral Service cannot help you find a lawyer for a legal case outside the state of Alabama. If you need a lawyer outside of Alabama, please consult the American Bar Association Lawyer Referral Directory. The Alabama State Bar is committed to promoting public access to high-quality legal services, regardless of financial or other circumstances.
